veida

what is veida?

Veida is an instrumental seminar that ensures FZY is able to carry out its ideological visions for the year. Veida will give participants an opportunity to have their voice directly heard in the movement.

Veida comes with a number of opportunities. Motions are passed and members can decide what will be enforced in the coming year. Members are given a chance to discuss and debate in order to establish what is important to them as members of the movement. They also decide who will be taking on leadership roles within the movement, such as voting for the Mazkir/a who will represent the movement for the following year, taking on the role as the ideological figure head of the movement.

What happens at Veida?

Submitting Motions

Throughout Veida, there will be a box in which you will be able to submit your motions. In each plenary session there will be a deadline by which motions will have to be submitted. The order of motion debates will be decided by the steering committee.

Plenary Sessions (Plen)

Everything get puts into action at the plenary sessions!

• The person who writes a motion proposes it with up to a two-minute speech

• If there are any amendments to the motion, they are discussed immediately after the motion’s proposal.

• After amendments have been voted on, the discussion on the motion continues and someone can speak against the motion for up to two minutes.

• If there is sufficient demand, a second round of speeches for and against the motion may be heard, this is down to the chair’s discretion. The second person to speak in favour will be the seconder of the motion, however this can be waived to someone else. In the second round of speeches, they will last one minute.

• After all speeches, the original proposer will give a summation, in which they cannot raise any new points.

• Motions will then be voted on and require a simple majority (over 50% of delegates) unless the constitution states otherwise.

making amendments

An amendment is making a change to a proposed motion (not policy from previous years). The steering committee will make the submitted motions accessible for people to see. If you see a motion that you would like to make a change to whether that is taking out a line, changing a word, or even changing all of the wording – this is your chance to make an amendment!

steering committee

One member from each year group is chosen prior to Veida to run the events of the weekend. They are tasked with writing Peulot(sessions), leading them, and running Plen.

The whole weekend is peer led.

Round Tables/open spaces

Open spaces are discussions that take place on every FZY shabbaton led by members. Topics can be on ABSOLUTELY anything. Examples include ‘Is Yog in Mill HIill overrated?’, ‘Is Fantasy Football ruining the experience of the game?’. They are a great way to get people talking and have some light hearted discussion.

Round table discussions are very similar, but the discussions have to be centred around FZY. Key issues are discussed and members can informally discuss ideas, offer input to other people’s ideas, and bounce off each other through constructive discussion. The idea behind them on Veida is to act as a starting point for new motions being written.

banter box

Last but not least - some may say even most importantly. Throughout Plen, any members can submit to the banter box a funny challenges or tasks for one of more members to carry out. Some people even write motions to make sure the banter box is a central part of Plen, keeping things light and allowing the group to come together as a movement.
