Netina - Ghana Experience
FZY, together with our partners, are thrilled to announce Netina, for participants in Year 12 (Scotland: S5).
Netina is a two-week cultural exchange programme in Ghana which touches on key Jewish values, including Tzedakah and Tikkun Olam.
Participants will have the opportunity to explore the capital city of Accra, as well as travel to other region for a programme deeply rooted in cultural exchange, international educational opportunities and developing leadership skills in a stimulating environment.
Spending time with partner organisations and meeting with local communities in rural Northern Ghana, participants will work for the development of the local community whilst developing leadership skills and experiencing leadership in action.
Throughout the programme, participants will broaden and deepen their understanding of the developing world, of Ghanaian culture and of our role in the global community.
The Netina Programme
The programme will consist of meeting with partner organisations on the ground, learning about the local projects and spending time with young Ghanaians and community chiefs.
Participants will then have the amazing opportunity to work on these projects alongside those of a similar age but a very different culture and lifestyle. They will share skills and expertise, support the development of their own leadership and experience exciting challenges in a unique environment. Our partner organisations all work to empower people in Northern Ghana, in particular women and young people. Through different means, these organisations aim to change and improve people's lives, bringing them out of extreme poverty.
Participants will live in accommodation located with a fenced and guarded compound, sharing rooms and living communally. Kashrut will be observed, as well as Shabbat in public places, alongside an educational programme with a strong focus on cultural experiences. The programme includes evening activities, meeting local community members and day trips to local sites and projects.
Before we fly
Participants will come together for a number of pre-trip orientation sessions facilitated by our partners and FZY. These aim to prepare you for the programme and provide you with relevant information, setting the scene for a meaningful and informative trip with a tight-knit cohort.
When we land
Upon arrival, participants will slowly become acquainted with the Ghanaian lifestyle, with time exploring the capital before meeting the youth leaders in other regions. You will get the chance to visit communities elsewhere and actively engage with partner organisations.
Please feel free to call the office or email Ortal.
The 2020 programme will be 4th August to 18th August 2020.
All applications will undergo an interview and selection process, which is competitive.
Logistics will be overseen by a specialist coordinator in Ghana, responsible for preparing the development connections, accommodation, trips and local safety. The group will also be accompanied by trained FZY Coordinators to ensure pastoral care and group dynamics.
The cost is £2999 for FZY members (including Tour 2019 participants) and £3179 for non-members. The programme price includes return flights from London to Ghana, activities, staffing, food, entrance fees, local private transportation in Ghana, basic medical insurance, all meals, security and accommodation.
Extra costs (not necessarily an exhaustive list):
A GP sign-off will need to be completed and returned to FZY (usually between £30-£50).
Vaccinations and anti-malarial medication will need to be arranged by participants prior to departure. We hear from previous participants that Asda and Superdrug have reasonably priced travel clinics. Please check with their websites for the latest required vaccinations.
It is the responsibility of participants to ensure that they obtain a valid visa for their stay in Ghana. There is a consulate in Highgate, North London, and in Glasgow, and costs of travelling to one of these consulates is the participant's own responsibility. It may be possible to apply by post.
Travel to and from the London airport (TBC) for the group flight to Ghana is not included.
