Introducing The Young Zionist 2023/24

Updated: Jan 12, 2024

New Editor Charles Burton introduces himself, the Young Zionist for its 92nd year, and announces the new Print Edition for 2023/24

It is my immense honour and privilege to introduce myself as the latest editor of the Young Zionist.

In its illustrious 92-year history, the Young Zionist has overseen the entire history of Israel as a state, predating the foundation of the country in 1948, covering wars, peace, intifada, and existential threats to its very being as a nation. Again, we find ourselves amidst another monumental event in the history of our state; the Jewish state, as, in the past months since the Israeli elections in November 2022, Israel has experienced a period of prolonged uncertainty, with mass protests drawing ‘hundreds of thousands’ of demonstrators in the streets of Israel, opposing Netanyahu’s proposed judicial reforms, and general strikes with possibly millions taking part, affecting the Israeli economy. I have been struck by this mass organisation by Israelis and Jews, both in Israel but also around the world, and I hope that we can foster interesting and vital discussions on the future of Israel, politics, history, and FZY as a movement through the Young Zionist in the upcoming year.

As a proudly pluralist organisation, we want to hear from you; our members, your thoughts and opinions matter, whatever they are and whatever issues they cover. If they’re important to you, they’re important to us! I will certainly enjoy reading your ideas in the coming weeks.

Therefore, it is also my absolute pleasure to announce the return of the Young Zionist Print Edition, with the title, ‘Return’. This theme is sure to be of much interest to you with topics such as the return of Netanyahu to office, the return of FZY Israel Tour, and the recent discussion regarding the Law of Return all being very open-ended and interesting questions for you to explore.

This last year has been a very successful year for FZY as a whole, and particularly for the YZ, and as such, I would like to thank my predecessor for all the hard work he has put in over the last year and for providing the movement with much food for thought with some brilliant articles having been published over the previous year. I would also like to wish him the best of luck with his new position.

There is a lot to be excited about for this upcoming year and remember, The YZ is your publication, your chance for your voice to be heard so email me with any questions, articles, or any other writing at: c.burton@cityoflondonschool.org.uk
