Charles Burton gives an update of the Board of Deptuties Uptate, who have organised a march in central London to commemorate the lives lost on October 7th.
To all FZY Members, my name is Charles Burton and I was elected as FZY’s representative to the Board of Deputies at Veida 2024. Over the past 6 months, I have settled into this role, attended meetings and spoken up for what you believe in as young, connected Zionists.
Since my last update, there has been a lot going on, both with the Board but also with Jewish life in general. Despite certain challenges and other important things taking place, such as my A-Levels (!), I have attended numerous meetings and voted in sessions for what you, the FZY membership want.
Last week, for instance, the Board had an election for members of so-called, ‘Divisions’. These Divisions are groups who sit and discuss a number of different issues, such as defence, education, finances and foreign affairs.
In these elections I read candidates’ manifestos and credentials and voted for a number of people who are highly skilled in the areas they are standing for. In particular, I made it a goal of mine to vote for younger members in particular. This was largely for two reasons – firstly, the Board has a problem with a lack of representation of younger people, and secondly, as a representative of a youth group, I believe that it is incredibly important to elect people with similar demographics and areas of interest as us- the FZY members.
I am pleased to report that many of the Deputies I voted for were successfully elected and I look forward to working with them to help FZY in the coming months.
Finally, and most importantly, on October 6th, the Board of Deputies has coordinated a march in Central London to commemorate the one-year anniversary of October 7th 2023, when Hamas attacked Israel, killing 1,200 people and kidnapping over 200. It is highly important that the Jewish community stands united over this issue and it would be incredible to see as many FZY members as possible showing up to this event. Please see details below.
