FZY's Got Talent is an initiative of the FZY Tzedakah Vaad, in support of the Ethiopian Bar/Bat Mitzvah Fund

FZY’s Got Talent - THE event of 2009. Planned and coordinated by the FZY Tzedakah Committee, FZY’s Got Talent is the chance for anyone with a hidden talent to shout about it. If you can sing, dance, play an instrument or tell a good joke, why not come and compete for the title of FZY’s most talented member.

Happening between 7pm and 10pm on Sunday 25th January 2009, tickets cost just £10 in advance or £15 on the door. All money raised will be in support of the Ethiopian Bar Mitzvah Fund, FZY’s official charity. The EBF provides the means by which Ethiopian immigrants to Israel can have the Bar Mitzvah which they otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford.

If you would like to register to perform, buy tickets, buy space for a message or advert in our programme or get more information please contact Jamie@fzy.org.uk or ring 02082016661.

Sponsorship Letter

Dear Sir / Madam,

My name is Joseph Benedyk and I am writing on behalf of the Federation of Zionist Youth (FZY) Tzedakah Vaad (charity committee). FZY is a Jewish youth movement based in Hendon with members ranging from 14 to 23. The Tzedakah Vaad is made up of five 14 and 15 year olds who want to spearhead FZY’s tzedakah initiatives this year. We have already organised a highly successful charity packathon where we collected and sorted clothes for impoverished Jews in Eastern Europe.

Our next project is “FZY’s Got Talent”, a charity talent show on 25th January 2009, an event which we expect to attract up to 250 people, including people of our own age, student members of our movement and of course parents and grandparents.

Naturally we want to raise as much money as possible for our chosen charity, the Ethiopian Bar Mitzvah Fund (EBF), and so have decided to offer community organisations, businesses and families the chance to advertise or put a message in the FZY’s Got Talent programme.
The EBF is a charity that provides Ethiopians immigrants to Israel with the chance of having a communal Bar Mitzvah ceremony and the required lessons leading up to the day itself, things that the community would not be able to afford to provide on its own.

We hope you’ll show your support for our charitable efforts by purchasing space in our programme to showcase your business to the community. We have space available for £35, £60 and £100.

In addition we are looking forward a main sponsor of the event who will naturally receive increased exposure. If you are interested in becoming this sponsor please contact Jamie Slavin in the FZY main office (02082016661).

We really hope you support our endeavours by purchasing space in the programme or alternatively donating prizes for a raffle. If you would like to support our initiative please complete the attached form and return to the FZY office. We will then supply you with an invoice and a copy of the programme as soon as they are printed in early January.

Kind regards and thank-you in advance,

Joseph Benedyk and the FZY Tzedakah Vaad

UJIA Ethiopian Bar and Bat Mitzvah Programme

Celebrating a Bar and Bat Mitzvah is something we in the UK may take for granted but this is not the case for Ethiopian children who have recently arrived in Israel. For the past eight years, UJIA has been providing young Ethiopians with a communal Bar/Bat Mitzvah ceremony, bringing joy and enrichment to hundreds of children and their families.

In addition to fund-raising for the programme, FZY is an integral part of the Bar/Bat Mitzvah programme. In the run-up to the ceremony, FZY tour groups join the Ethiopian children in their preparations. FZY tour groups also participate in the ceremony in Jerusalem and join the celebrants for lunch and dancing after the ceremony. The special day continues with a moving “Salute to the Ethiopian Community” organized and performed by FZY tour groups.

Together we provide:

  • Bar/Bat mitzvah lessons for participants
  • Shabbat together promoting spiritual and social bonding
  • Organisation and volunteering programme
  • Elegant clothes, shoes and jeans for weekdays
  • Sets of Talitot and Tefilin for all the boys and candlesticks for all the girls
  • Siddurim for all the participants
  • Silver necklaces with a Magen David for all the girls
  • Three day seminar in Jerusalem
  • Transportation to Jerusalem for family members to join in the Simcha together with staff and guards
  • Renting the Great Synagogue for the ceremony and lunch
  • Band for Simcha dancing
  • Spending money for each participant as a gift
  • Photographs for all the celebrants and their families

The Ethiopian Bar and Bat Mitzvah is one of several strategic educational and welfare programmes the UJIA supports to aid the integration of Ethiopian immigrants into Israeli society. By offering your support for this programme, you will guarantee help to the Ethiopian immigrant community, contributing to the successful absorption of Ethiopian Jews into Israeli society.
