Star Search
For one night only FZY is proud to announce Starsearch – a mix of talent, entertainment and fundraising. Auditions are being held in September with a grand final on November 4th. Acts of any age are welcome; show us what you have got! The final is set to take place at a top London venue with a guest panel of judges.
The night is in aid of:
The Ethiopian Barmitzvah Fund - Celebrating a Bar and Bat Mitzvah is something we in the UK may take for granted but this is not the case for Ethiopian children who have recently arrived in Israel. For the past eight years, UJIA has been providing young Ethiopians with a communal Bar/Bat Mitzvah ceremony, bringing joy and enrichment to hundreds of children and their families. To learn more click here.
Grief Encounter – The Grief Encounter vision is that every bereaved child and their family in the UK get the best possible help, recognition and understanding following their loss. They dedicate themselves, with the help of others, to making a difference to those children whose lives will never be the same.

Be a leader! - Leadership Training
FZY focuses a large amount of time and energy on leadership (Hadracha). This year, for the first time ever, there are a number of leadership roles available to the post-tour year group. Do you think you would make a great leader? Well, now is your chance to show off your skills. We are very excited about this, as not only is it fun and very social, it can also greatly enhance your UCAS form.
The FZY leadership course is happening in both London and Manchester and only costs £2 to attend. Each session lasts 2 hours and includes topics such as: team-work, problem-solving and group dynamics. Join us; learn the tricks of the trade!
We are recruiting leaders for this December holiday. Winter Breeze camp is taking place from 23rd December to 27th December and we need you to help it happen. Please let us know if you think you have what it takes. Your will be responsible for leading activities, the welfare of your chanichim and bringing innovative ideas to the camp. To learn more about Winter Breeze, click here.
Another new and innovative leadership opportunity we have this year is the America trip. If you are interested, for more information and to request a brochure click here.

The EBF Apprentice
The Apprentice is a competition aimed for all you business minded people out there. It will boost your C.V., better your UCAS form and you can win a free trip to Israel next year if you win (terms and conditions apply).
The Ethiopian Barmitzvah Fund [can you click on this to get more information about it, same link as for Starsearch] (EBF) brand has been created [can we put the logo visibly on this page] and FZY will be forming a partnership with a leading manufacturer of Barmitzvah goods – kippot, invitations etc. FZY will offer the Jewish Community an EBF Sponsored Bar-Mitzvah, where the manufacturer will stamp Bar-Mitzvah kippot & invitations with the EBF logo, allowing families to support this relevant & worthy cause. FZY will direct potential clients toward the manufacturer who in return will pay the EBF a commission of the sales revenue.
The EBF Apprentices (you, should you choose to accept the challenge) will be the EBF sales/PR team. You will advertise the EBF in school magazines, Synagogue newsletters, and amongst family and friends.
Once you have registered the interest of a client, the client will be directed to Pikey or Jordan (leaders of tours 2 and 3). If the client agrees to sponsor the EBF then you will gain points in the EBF Fantasy League Table on the FZY Website.
Should you choose to take this on, all you need to do is fill in the registration form. In June, the chanich/a with the most points wins & becomes the 2008 EBF Apprentice. Good luck!

UCAS UCAN
In FZY there are around 250 university students, who are studying a vast range of subjects – ranging from medicine to business. The UCAS UCAN scheme has been put in place so you can be matched up with a university student who is studying the same course that you may be interested in.
It is your chance to find out what the university/degree is really like. When you go to open days, they can show you round so you can see university life from a student’s perspective. Your ‘mentor’ can give you tips for your personal statement as well. You are not committed to anything if you apply; it is up to you how much you require from your ‘mentor’. You have nothing to lose, you will only gain.
Just apply by...

UJIA Ethiopian Bar and Bat Mitzvah Programme
Celebrating a Bar and Bat Mitzvah is something we in the UK may take for granted but this is not the case for Ethiopian children who have recently arrived in Israel. For the past eight years, UJIA has been providing young Ethiopians with a communal Bar/Bat Mitzvah ceremony, bringing joy and enrichment to hundreds of children and their families.
In addition to fund-raising for the programme, FZY is an integral part of the Bar/Bat Mitzvah programme. In the run-up to the ceremony, FZY tour groups join the Ethiopian children in their preparations. FZY tour groups also participate in the ceremony in Jerusalem and join the celebrants for lunch and dancing after the ceremony. The special day continues with a moving “Salute to the Ethiopian Community” organized and performed by FZY tour groups.
Together we provide:
- Bar/Bat mitzvah lessons for participants
- Shabbat together promoting spiritual and social bonding
- Organisation and volunteering programme
- Elegant clothes, shoes and jeans for weekdays
- Sets of Talitot and Tefilin for all the boys and candlesticks for all the girls
- Siddurim for all the participants
- Silver necklaces with a Magen David for all the girls
- Three day seminar in Jerusalem
- Transportation to Jerusalem for family members to join in the Simcha together with staff and guards
- Renting the Great Synagogue for the ceremony and lunch
- Band for Simcha dancing
- Spending money for each participant as a gift
- Photographs for all the celebrants and their families
The Ethiopian Bar and Bat Mitzvah is one of several strategic educational and welfare programmes the UJIA supports to aid the integration of Ethiopian immigrants into Israeli society. By offering your support for this programme, you will guarantee help to the Ethiopian immigrant community, contributing to the successful absorption of Ethiopian Jews into Israeli society.
